Borlotti Beans (including those saved from seed) 2021

 24 April 2021

Some Borlotti Bean seeds saved form last year which I've set off in a seed tray with a heating pad underneath.  Regrettably I do not remember the make of seed that was saved.

15 seeds sowed in total of which at least over half are looking promising.

4 strong plants then transplanted to the greenhouse

Here are the bean seedlings planted outside a week or so later, occupying the 4 bamboo canes shown.  Some spare lemonade cut-offs used to protect the smaller seedlings from any icy blasts that may occur, which did happen this time last year between 12-14 May 2020, where the night-time temperatures got down to between 2 to 4 degrees Celsius, which when combined with a consistent breeze served to zap a number of plants.

Thankfully the short-term weather outlook for this time this year promises to be somewhat milder.

(Note the transplanted Musselburgh leek to the right, which I have retained this year for the purpose of obtaining another set of seeds.)

Some newer Berlotti seed purchased from Sutton's of type "Firetongue" coming along nicely atop the heated pad:

An update on the seeds sown from those saved last year.  Remember to save some!
